Know your song well

No Gravatar

There is no doubt that music is a basic and essential part of our humanity… but have you ever considered exactly how  that statement works.

I have just been listening to a virtuoso guitarist called John Renbourn

this piece is seriously difficult to play…..  WELL…..

I have tried…

There is an underlying base and an over tune, PLAYED BY ONE PERSON… all deliberate …. but at the same time played with FEELING

It is amazing that an artiste can achieve such a diverse and beautiful sound with just one instrument.

What does that tell you

In terms of Internet Marketing..

The same tune can be copied by many … it is the way it is played that counts…. very few actually compose the tune … many try and replicate…

So long as you understand and feel the music then…. you can play… with practice… first with other’s compositions… then develop your own.

Music is a progressive thing.. now and then a genius moves thing on on leaps and bounds

Very few things in life are truly original

We as Internet  Marketers can learn that things are a progression and we can play the tune in our own way

To paraphrase the words of Bob Dylan (Hard rain)

Know your song well before you start singing.

Then you have something to say… the world is becoming smaller because of the www and social media and thus more personal.

It doesn’t matter if your song is not understood initially

Understanding and having control of the instrument and knowing  your song….. will sooner or later attract others who know or feel  the same.

Music is like our business

There is an overture but within it there are a multitude of sub theams that our listeners can hear… at times we listen to the whole at others we hear just one sub-beat. There is a base line  and flourishes all carefully played and blended to achieve the desired result.

But the overriding tune and how it is played… is the thing that attracts or otherwise. Once the artiste has our ears then we  will listen to the rest of the tune.

Before you listen to the piece below I think you should know the name of it  … hec

Don’t listen to this if you are stressed or on a blogging mission

You MUST not listen to this if you are surrounded by the usual things in life

Listen to it on your own….

get a cup of whatever you drink relax

…then… imagine….

The Hermit

  1. Hi Vince,

Being a musician myself, I appreciate this post very much. I have been playing acoustic guitar for a long time now and have played bass guitar for over 20 years. (shows my age I guess) :) But relating internet marketing to the forms of music is something I never concidered before and it makes sense. Hey I like the recording too. He plays well.

I also want to turn you on to a fabulous guitar plaer also. He came to our small town doing a Taylor guitar workshop and I totally blown away. I never saw anybody play acoustic guitar like that. It sounds like at leat 3 guitars going at once. Check out this video and be sure to look at White rose for Heidi. There’s a real special story he tells about it every time. Taylor made him a signiture guitar with a white rose on the headstock.

    Here’s the link for it.

This can be true for a lot of people, they listen but don’t hear.

    Hi Vince,

What a beautiful piece of music. so relaxing, yet so refreshing. My father is a guitarist and he would love a piece like this. I have many memories of him strumming as a child.

I have a few albums of guitar music by an artist called “Armik” his style is Spanish flamenco.

Re the analogy to internet marketing. I completely agree: “Know your song well before you start singing.”

For the last 18 months I have been learning this industry. I have been asked many times to teach yet I am not ready. I do not know the song so to speak I am still learning the versus!

I am a big believer of walking the talk and it is important to know what you are talking about and what you teach.

I hope everything is going fine for the challenge. This has been one very BIG task. I am just about finished my own blogging rounds plus I am doing a tally of people’s comments as I go.

Thank you for the enjoyable music, it has just relaxed me beautifully.

  12. Hi Vince, a fine gem from John Renbourn! His style is so carefree and light. I’ve always thought the best of John and Renaissance and Pentangle, as well as David Bromberg and Stefan Grossman to.

Your analogy of the song and the marketer is very cool and it fits like a glove. When someone asks me what I do, for now I’m going to say, “I play the internet, and writes songs.” ;-) Thanks for the sound check Vince, be well, Steve D.

  15. Hi Vince

What a great analogy. I love music but have never had the patience to learn to play an instrument, something which I now regret.

Learning the ins and outs of internet marketing also requires time and patience, something which many overlook and that’s why they jump from one thing to another without ever giving anything a fair chance. But that’s partly the fault of the guru’s who imply that by using their latest, greatest product you’ll be making a six figure income by the end of next week.

  17. Hi Vince,

What a melodious blog post! The comparison between music and internet marketing is great. I’ve never though of that. And as Petteri said, many people are afraid to start their own business because they think that they need to come up with something that is completely unique, something that no one has ever done before. Yes this is true when you want to create the next Facebook, YouTube and make millions online. This can happen but for the most people it is easier to create their own information products, build their lists, or affiliate marketing and make their million in a few years rather than creating THE website and THE project and become millionaires from that specific project in just a few months.

Perhaps it’s a little like the fable of the Hare and tortoise, consistant effort gets you there in the end. Regardless of how talented a muscian John Renborn is … it was hour after hour of practice that enables him to play so well. Making small alteration to existing products can eventually result in something completly differnt
      Vince

  18. Beautiful piece of music and I like the analogy you make. But fortunately for me, you can run an internet marketing online business even if you are tone deaf (my school choir teacher asked me to stand at the back and play the symbols!)

Nice analogy for relating your music to business. It’s true you can copy music as you can copy a business, but you need to make it your own. It’s like any product you create. You can almost guarantee there is one out there already; yours just has to be better!

In this world, many of us try to create our own product or own voice, but like what you said,”Very few things in life are truly original” as we are not alone in this world, and and many of our thoughts keep colliding and affecting each other so we can have new creation, example like the 100 comment challenge make us meet and communicate. Like Jaycee, me too find it difficult to simply re-package the exterior of a product and called it my own. Guess that is the reason why I am way slower than most on my online quest.

I think you put it at best when you said

We as Internet Marketers can learn that things are a progression and we can play the tune in our own way

    That’s what happened to me.

It is very tempting to simply jump on the “fastest wagon” and earn money the “easier” way. Yet with the advancement of technology, I really feel we should Create More Unique Value from it rather than the usual copy and paste method. I know it is really a matter of choice for anyone to do whatever they want. But that’s just not really me.

We learned things, adapt it with innovation to make it better. I feel this is a better way for me, though it take a few more steps to reach the goals in my life.

What an inspirational post! I love what you said about music and how we can related to it in so many ways as an internet marketer. I also have a few songs I keep in my heart to play it over and over again whenever things hit you down to the ground. Thanks for sharing this post!

      Hi Justin
That a great way to look at things. There is a tune for most things good and bad, but music can change our moods and outlook

I love the analogy. The hermit was fantastic. I just closed my eyes and let the music over take me.

You talk about most things in life are not original. I agree. The best thing to do is taking something that os working and make it better.

To use another analogy, don’t reinvent the wheel, just make it better.

    Great post!

      Hi Rick
I am so pleased you liked John Renborne I have listened to him since I was 18 years (to many years to mention) I think he is an under rated artiste.

This was inspiring to me because I am just now learning to play the guitar. It will take the rest of my life to master this skill, just like writing. And what is true mastery? For me, that means continual, joyful practice, which never ends. Hope you have a great weekend, Vince.

    HI Suzie
Yes the design process can work like that also, when designing products for my manufacturing business I would take an existing product and change it and eventually it would be totally different. Thanks for siging up Suzie I will keep you updated with information and free products from my mentors as I get them
I am looking forward to the property meeting in London this Saturday

    Hi Vince,

What a great piece of music,
I love the guitar, it’s so restful isn’t it? Where did you find that music and Is it something you normally listen to?
I find it intriguing how a piece of music can take you back years, just a few bars on the radio and you’re transported back to the past reminiscing about people, places, good times and bad. It can put a broad smile on your face or bring a tear to your eye but there’s no mistaking the feelings it evokes.
As you say, it doesn’t matter how many times a great piece is copied, because each time someone adds their own interpretation which makes it slightly different and personal to them, and the combinations are infinite.
I’ve copied bits of content from other sites, changed it around a bit and made it ‘my own’. So long as you have SOMETHING to work with initially the possibilities are endless!
    Great post Vince,

    Suzie

    Hi Jaycee
It is so interesting how our different minds work from the same thing… To me the tune reminds me of a 14th century Lady of the manor dressed in one of those pointy hats and long sleeved gowns sitting side saddle on a horse. She and her entourage are on their way to the Old English Medieval Church on a crisp Semptember Sunday morning.
Yes you are right music is such a powerful medium…. we both are on the same par regarding the leafy sunlit road :)

    Hi Vince

I googled the “Lady Goes To Church” piece, thanks for referring it to me.

This ‘lady’ sounds pretty harried to me, listening to the guitar music!

I imagined her hurrying along the road, in a crisp blue coat – dressed sixties style. She was tapping a small child on the shoulder encouraging her to keep up, her daughter I presumed, doing her best so that they wouldn’t be late for church, though they were running a bit behind.

Strangely, though John is English, I pictured this lady walking briskly along a leafy, sunlit American boulevard; mother and daughter intent on their journey to a respectable white-painted American Baptist church.

Strange how music can conjure up such images, isn’t it?

    thanks again

    Hi Vince

Both ‘The Hermit’ music and your post were beautiful. Your analogy is really breathtaking and inspiring – I loved it!

As someone who loves music and originality, I could really resonate with what you said. In one of my posts I commented, not to offend anyone, but just to be real, that too many of us are copy-catting online. It’s just too boring and uninspiring to market like that, in my opinion.

I have heard, read and seen a lot about PLR products and how with just a new front cover and graphics we can call it our own – NOT!

Even if it is a good product, it will never represent me – not properly.

Even when musicians and songwriters do cover versions – they will always be compared to the original.

Well, as we know, some artists even surpass the quality of the original, and why is that?

Well, it’s because they added their own unique flavour to the mix – because they expressed themselves,a and because the hearers responded to the essence of that person’s spirit as relayed through the music / compostition.

You’ve done that here, Vince, gloriously well.

I’ll keep coming back now that I know where to find you. Don’t stop giving the blogosphere such excellent, original, meaningful and relevant content.

    Thanks

      Hi Jaycee
Thank you for your kind words I am very flattered as they have come from such an accomplished blogger as you.
You are so right too much music is just rehashed second rate trash simply broardcast with the sole purpose of making money, the entertaiment factor of the music in the first place has been forgotten. You may like another one of John Renborn’s peices called “lady Goes To Church” It is interesting how the music so suits the title :)

    Nice analogy, I like it.

Many people are afraid to start their own business because they think that they need to come up with something that is completely unique, something that no one has ever done before.

Most of the things have been done already, but you can always add your own flavor to whatever you want to do. The easiest way to get started is to take a lot of influences from the most successful people.

    Cheers.

      Hi Petteri
Yes you are right, in fact sometimes it can be harder to get a compleatly new product up and running, because people can have risistance to it until it is more understood. Often there is no point in trying to re-invent the wheel.
      Thanks for visiting
