Just read a great blog by Scott Barron who asked the question what kind of boss are you?

I have never worked for anyone else, even when I worked for someone else….

don’t get me wrong here… when I did find myself temporarily working in someone else’s business I always gave 100% to them.

but I never thought that I would make a career of it… and there were times when I was told I could go far in X Y or Z business.

So the question is..

Are you a Boss or an employee

I remember at age 9  picking apples from the trees in my parents garden and selling them to the neighbours.

You may have seen the film “the battle of Britain” filmed in  1968 I was 10 years old then and was selling the surplus webbing from the film as marble holders in the playground (marbles were the” in game” at the time). They filmed it very near to where I lived and for one reason and another I got hold of the surplus webbing belts…..another story…

Did that make me a boss or a salesman?

I was money orientated and realised that there were two ways I could make  it

1 with my hands

2 with my head

More on that later

I have spent 32 years employing people and I am the first to hold my hand up and say that NO ONE is a perfect boss, I believe we learn on the job. Learning faster than others is the key…

I have learnt something over the years, one  thing is…. am I my own boss??… people look to the boss for direction and leadership…. but if you are not focused and sincere in yourself then what chance does your staff have? .

That is to say if you want to be a boss then you have to be in charge of yourself FIRST…

But think on…. who works for who… Do you work for your business and staff and  for the government via your tax liability and their welfare.. etc etc,

of course you always work for you that is what makes you the boss, if you don’t like to accept that fact then join a commune

On the other hand I think it is important to always remember that running a dictatorship will only stifle productive and talented members of your business, including you.

I suppose one of the most important lessons I have learned is that people don’t work for you as the boss ….they work for themselves… and if you as a boss create the right circumstances…. they will work willingly for the company…. Money is not necessarily their only motivation… I have lost some good people over the years by not recognising this simple fact.

All sounds very ra ra ra… like people aren’t called employees anymore they are called associates… well that depends on the boss…

You are not making any sense. I don’t play follow the leader. I never did. I don’t take anyone’s word for the gospel but I find the truth out for myself.

The most unfortunate part of it all is that none of our ‘leaders’ are leaders either. They bicker and hiss at each other, too busy pointing fingers to actually get anything done…

    Hey Vince,

Right now I work for a “boss” but hope one day to be my own boss.

Don’t get me wrong I do like my boss and my job, I work with the elderly and they just have so many great stories from their past that fascinate me, but I would still like to be free from the daily 9-5 grind.

Loved the story of you picking apples, I thought you were going to be in trouble with your parents for picking them! How suspicious am I ha ha.

      Hi Sally,
It won’t be long before that happens for you. It is amazing how fast you are moving forward, And I won’t give up on trying to interview you one day:)

  4. How very true Vince!

I’ve worked under many bosses and been a boss over others in many places.

It’s funny how you see people who respond so differently in the same situation or environment. What suits one will not suit the other and vice-versa, it’s the old story from Aesop’s Fable, “The Man, the Boy and The Donkey”.

In the “employer-employee” relationship, it is always going to be finding “matches” and there will always be “mismatches”. There is no “one size fits all”, and that is why there is no “perfect boss”!

A bit like marketing, eh! We are trying to match people and products!

When you are self employed, you are the boss and the employee, and that’s one “match-up” you had better make sure that you get right, because, as you inferred on my blog, you actually get it wrong!

    Regards,
    Mark.

      Hi Mark
Thanks for visiting, I am also a fan of Aesops fables. It is very difficult to please everyone and there is little point in trying. I think it is more important to be fair approchable, but at the same time the boss has to be just that the boss

    Hi Peter
that makes perfect sense, I fully understand and that is what I was trying to convey… the next step for me is to make sure I organize things so I don’t have to organize things

  6. vinceNo Gravatar says:

    Hey Darren
Thanks for that. I have always thought that i was the boss and any one else I was working for was wasting my time
I like your last video that a real cool place your are living in

  7. Hey Vince, Good post. I understand where you’re coming from.

Personally, I have always worked in jobs where I felt like I was working for someone else. But then the part of the job where I felt I could give value I usually did very good at (even though my bosses never focused me towards that.) I have found that bosses have been good for directing me towards wasting time.

That’s why it’s exciting to be part of MWA 3.0. Finally getting to do something that is for myself and productive and hopefully has value!

    Hi Vince,
    Liking the blog.
I too work as an employee and an employer, although i only employ myself. I have a offline business hiring diggers, even though i am my own boss i still have to answer to myself, if that makes any sense. If i don’t keep organized it’s all going to go wrong. Like Alex says Keep It Simple Stupid.

    Hi Walter
Your are right, unfortunatly sucessful business people can be very much that way.
It only makes their job harder in the long run, it is a difficult skill for some to learn
    Thanks for your comment

    Hey Pauline
Not sure how to answer in the timeline… you were kind enough to let me know that the blog was not working via Alex Jefreys forum,
Much more importantly …. Whatever order you may be reading this… then…
thank you for all your help

AND you are only biding your time… the only person you work full time for is YOU

Sometimes I wonder about many people on authority who are completely ignorant of the important aspect of being a good boss. I have had my encounters with many kinds of bosses but seldom do I find a good one. Most of them are guided by their ego and arrogance. :-)

Hey Vince I love this post. I am still an employee but I am also a contractor. I work full time still for an employer but I am outsourcing my internet marketing work at the moment so I am also a contractor.

I want to be a internet business manager of my own business so I have moved one step closer only so far. Here’s to your success!
